Female Genital Mutilation Crisis

Hello ladies! I was reading an article, which focused on female mutilation in the United States of America, which really surprised me because freshman year when we talked about it, we basically focus on African and Arab countries so being that it is currently happening especially in the U.S is more disturbing.

Practices like this are methods in which the male gender use to overpower women and make them feel inferior.  This practice is justified by supporters who say that this keeps a Woman’s Chastity until Marriage because nowadays, some women do whatever without limit. Therefore, the chastity of women is kept intact until their marriage because the purity of women still matters to men. To me this argument is basically saying that women cannot control themselves sexually therefore, they deserve to be circumcised which is an unreasonable argument. These people don’t think about the side effects female circumcision causes. This practice put women at risk causing urinary tract and pelvic infections, interference in their ability to deliver a baby normally--the act of delivering a baby is already risky for a woman. It becomes more so if they are circumcised since it affects the delivery procedure. Also, because of this, they are likely to bleed more in case their vagina has to be split open. This also has a negative effect on their sexuality as well as self-esteem because it takes away a woman's ability to enjoy sex which instead of being a beautiful thing becomes extremely painful for them. Also most at time, the tools used in the procedure are not sterilized, making it unsafe and harmful being that it endangers women's life.

Women are beautiful creations of God, and it is unfortunate that women's rights are constantly being violated from all angles. We are all beautifully created by God and should respect one another instead of trying to overpower each other.

My question is: As a practice, is female circumcision really necessary?

  1. Female genital mutilation is so unnecessary. Women should have the right to do as they feel fit with their own bodies and for people to do this to young girls all over the world is crazy. If a woman decides she wants to do this to herself then i cant judge because its her body. In my opinion women should not think a thing like this is okay and should not do this to their child. It causes so many health problems and is not usually done right because God didn't mean for women to be circumcised. Watching the stories from freshman year of the young girls in Africa it hurt my feelings and made me think of their parents in a negative way because you heard the girls screaming almost for their lives as if they were being raped. I had to turn away from the video at some parts because it just was so bad. I felt as though I was the one getting circumcised. I am very AGAINST female genital mutilation!

  2. Female genital mutilation is in my opinion not only unnecessary but abusive. A man should have absolutely no power or say over a woman's body. I do also understand that those practices are apart of a culture and we have no right to judge but I feel it should be the woman's choice. She should have complete control over the subject. I also do feel children should have no part in the matter and it should be a choice for older women who are educated and understand completely what's to come and the health problems attached to the procedure as well.

  3. I remember discussing the topic of female gentile mutilation in my freshman year and I can say that from my own knowledge of the subject that genital mutilation is not only a redundant procedure but and act of violence and abuse as well. I was given the chance to watch a video of the gruesome procedure being done by a small child's own mother. It almost brought me to tears to see such a young child go through all that unnecessary pain just to fit in her societies expectation of what a woman is supposed to be when she wasn't even yet a woman herself. It also disturbs me that the women who actually practice these procedures find attracting a man more important than their own well being.

  4. It's extremely sad to see that this is still continuing around the world today. I still remember everything the freshmen team taught us about how dangerous this was to women and how violates their rights completely. Women should always control of their own body and what should and should not be done too it . I had no idea that FGM was being done in the U.S ,that shocked me completely. Being as though the U.S is usually a country who sets a precedent for other countries on health and illnesses. I'm usually aware that many foreign countries who give women less rights ,treat their women like that. It's sad to see that we might be one of those countries to do the same thing. I feel as though that female circumcision is not necessary at all , it just causes more damage and dangers to the female body .

  5. I also remember this topic from freshman year health and english class. It is a horrible crime that this is inflicted on women. Genital Mutilation is both pointless and extremely dangerous. You brought up a great point, that most of the instruments used were dirty, which could lead to infections and endanger the mother's life. Along with that you also brought up that urinary tract infections and pelvic infections infer with there ability to have a normal child birth. I agree with you complete is is way of showing dominance over women and trying to control every aspect of their lives for them. It is way for men to show there control and "superiority". Also if there is not any life threat side effect a damage self-esteem could be just as dangerous and harmful. Great post and great job, but a horrible act that happens to too many women.

  6. I remember being horrified when I first heard about female genital mutilation. I remember going home and watching interviews of women talking about their experience and saying that women were not supposed to have pleasure and that women are just the instrument to a man's pleasure. It definitely is shocking to hear that this happens in the United States but you also have to remember that culture travels everywhere. As human beings, we need to educate each other and others about this issue so we can put a stop to female genital mutilation home, as well as places that still carry out this practice.

  7. Female mutilation is a one of the most disgusting and in human crime done to women in my opinion. The fact that people actually believe that this can stop a women from just free lancing and having sex all over the is ironic because it stops them from enjoying sex completely. These views also show how little they think of us women that we cannot have a mind on our own to just say no or not have sex. maybe they should have male mutilation so men would stop having sex with everything moving and getting women pregnant just so they wont take care of the baby. the arguments to justify this are weak to me because it all comes down to men want to control their wives or whatever. Not only it cutting all the feeling in the vagina so they can'y enjoy sex but it has alot of health risk to it to.

  9. I am really interested by what Raqia had to say about female mutilation as a means of taking away the enjoyment of sex. I think these tactics all go back to the expectations society has set for women. Women are expected to be chaste and delicate. Women cannot be corrupted by sex. The only time they are able to have sex is when their husbands want to have sex or have children. Women who enjoy sex are seen as whores. That double standard has existed for a long time, and it is sad that such means are resorted to to remind women of their place in society. Great job, Faith. I really enjoy reading your blog.

  10. I can't even begin to imagine how horrifying it is for women to go throug this. I remember in freshmen year, young girls were deceived; so they're parents will tell them they're going to a family friend's house and they end up taking them to a native doctor who performs the practice. And the perdorm it on young girls who aren't reallt developed yet. It's painful when you accidentally cut yourself with a knife how much your private part!! And it's being forcefully done by some man you don't even know! It's really horrifying and it's something that should have been stopped a long time already! I agree with Raqia; female mutilation is really inhumane! People need to realize that females are human too and feel pain!
