Housewives Vs. Single Working Women

After watching the movie “Iron Jawed Angels”, I noticed that the tension between the single women and the housewives is apparent. The mothers thought that the single women were not fulfilling their roles as “proper” women and wasting their time and not doing their duty whereas the single women thought the housewives were a waste because they were dependent on their husbands and were home with the children. I have been noticing that housewives have this negative connotation to them. People believe that housewives stay at home all day, taking care of the kids, cooking and cleaning and often misunderstand that it is hard work to be a housewife. Although a housewife does not have a typical job, she does have a very important job of her own.
Single women are mostly independent and do not rely on a partner to take care of themselves, which has earned them so much more credit in today’s world. I came across this discussion on debate.org that asked “Are Working Women More Respected Than Housewives68% of people agree that working women are more respected because housewives are seen as lazy and useless because they do not contribute to making a living. An opposing argument is that housewives should be more respected because they are devoting their life to their husband and children and are not being “selfish” and depriving the child of the attention he/she needs from their mother.

As I think back to the movie, Alice Paul and Lucy Burns sort of look down on the housewives because they were not making a real effort with helping to gain women’s rights but they did forget that the housewives were the ones with the political connections, in the case of Emily. The mothers could not actively participate in the picketing outside the White House because they could have faced arrest and taken away from their children. Although both set of women looked at each other differently, both of them were needed in the fight to gain women’s rights. What do you think of Housewives and Single Women?

  1. Great Post! In my family I do not really see single women because it just so happens the last single women in my family is about to get married which I think is weird. But for a while I did look down on housewives because TV shows like The New Jersey Housewives shows how women at home are. Which I can kind of relate to my mom where they are on the phone all the time, taking care of kids, and starting beef. But TV shows like that make me hate housewives my mom for a while was a housewife and I remember always asking what her job was and she said to be your mom. I think it is so funny you bring up this topic because the other day I went out with my aunt she was telling me that her son Christopher had said to her " Why don't you go to work like papi" she said "because I work at home and watch you abby, and gabe" he responded " well I think you should go work in an office" and my aunt responded " I used to work in an office a big one with my TV and then I had you guys" and that was the end of the conversation. Not that many people view a housewife as a real job and only single women can work but my mom now has six kids and she still works and is making a living for herself. But I applaud both women!

  2. This is a great post! I most definitely agree with you that housewives do hard work because they have to cook, clean, and take care of the children and these things are not easy at all. Most of us hate even cleaning our own rooms not to think of an entire house. Housewives have a lot of work cut out for them. Although, I agree with this idea that housewives have a lot of work, I have to disagree with the idea that Alice Paul looked down on them. I think she just saw that they couldn’t take serious action in the fight because they would be worried about taking care of their children and their family. I honestly think Alice was right because being a housewife or a mother, not a lot would want to take the radical approach and would go to jail for this cause because they have their family to worry about. But I do believe it takes two of these groups to get women the rights they deserve because the housewives has connections with the lawmakers because these are their husbands and husbands friends, but the single women use their radical ways to get attention toward the issue leaving these politicians to make this issue a priority and not something they would get to later.

  3. I believe housewives can be dependent on their spouse but new and modern housewives try to be independent from their husband. They do things such as creating organizations and becoming entrepreneur's. Being that my mother is a single mother i look up to to single women because they have to work twice as hard for their children and to be able to provide the needs for the family. They play the role of the mother and the father in the household. Single women have to work countless hours and still find the time to put food on the table so in my opinion single mothers are more hard working then housewives.
